Updated: Sep 23

Welcome to the comprehensive guide for optimising your PC to fully harness the capabilities of Shining 3D's cutting-edge software. In the dynamic world of dental technology, staying ahead with the most efficient tools is vital.

Renowned for their precision, ease of use, and affordability, the Shining 3D range of scanners and printers are the perfect companion for dental professionals. This guide will walk you through the necessary steps to ensure your PC is perfectly tuned to support not only the Aoralscan 3 but all of Shining 3D's innovative solutions.

From ensuring hardware compatibility to software installation and maintenance, we've got you covered. Let's enhance your digital dentistry experience and unlock the full potential of your equipment, starting right here.

Step 1

Is the PC good enough to run and support high-end graphics processing and complex geometric computations?

Shining 3D software requires a PC which meets or exceeds these specifications.

  • Intel i7 8700 or greater (not AMD)

  • NVIDIA RTX 4060

  • 32gb ram

  • 256gb SSD

  • Windows 11

  • 2 USB 3 ports

  • USB-C PD (15w+)

  • WiFi capability (the software requires an internet connection)

If the PC meets or exceeds these specifications, jump to step 2––if not, buy a PC that meets or exceeds the specifications and come back.

Step 2

Is the internet speed fast enough?

  1. Open your browser, go to google.com and

  2. Type speed test into the search bar

  3. Click Run Speed Test

  4. Record your results

Your up and down speeds should be greater than 25mbps. If your recorded upload or download speed is less than 25mbps, your internet is too slow for most, if not all software to run effectively.

To increase your download and upload speeds, contact your IT provider or your Internet Service Provider.

Step 3

Uninstall any antivirus software.

  1. Select Start and type "add and remove" to search for that app.

  2. Select the Add or remove programs from the search results.

  3. Scroll through the apps and remove any and all antivirus software.

  4. Restart the PC

Step 4

Disable Windows Defender.

  1. Select Start and type "Windows Security" to search for that app.

  2. Select the Windows Security app from the search results, go to Virus & threat protection, and under Virus & threat protection settings select Manage settings.

  3. Switch Real-time protection to Off.

  4. Select Start and type "Firewall" to search for that app.

  5. Select "Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off."

  6. Disable Private and Public Firewalls.

Step 5

Update the GPU drivers and Windows. (1-4 Dell computers only)

  1. Plug in the laptop power supply

  2. Select Start and type "Update."

  3. Select Dell update.

  4. Click Check for updates and/or follow the on-screen instructions. The PC will restart multiple times during this process.

  5. Select Start and type "Update."

  6. Select Check for updates.

  7. Click Check for updates and follow the on-screen instructions. Also check for optional updates under the Advanced options tab. The PC will restart multiple times during this process.

  8. Restart the PC.

Step 6

Force the PC to use the NVIDIA GPU instead of the on-board intel GPU.

  1. Right-click on the Desktop.

  2. Select Show more options.

  3. Select NVIDIA Control Panel.

  4. Select the Adjust Image Settings with Preview.

  5. Select the Use the advanced 3D image settings.

  6. Click Take me there.

  7. Under the Preferred Graphic Processor drop-down, select High-performance NVIDIA processor.

  8. Restart the PC

Step 6

Create a folder in the C:\ (or the letter denoting the hard disk) drive named SystemRecovery. This is where you'll save all software installers related to Osseo Group products and services.

Step 7

Regardless of the version already installed on the PC, download the latest software HERE. For a faster download, use the DropBox link instead of the Shining 3D server.

Step 8

Move the newly downloaded software folder to the SystemRecovery folder.

Step 9

Open the newly downloaded software folder and run the installer. Remember: You must check the install location is C:\ (or the letter denoting the hard disk) We have seen this come up as D:\ and you must manually change the letter from D➞ C by highlighting the "D" and typing a capital "C" then clicking Install.

Install Location

The software will uninstall any previous versions and reinstall the software––no data will be lost in the process.

Step 10

Test the software.

Important Guidelines for Operating Your Scanning PC

  • Avoid Installing Other Scanning Software: To prevent confusion regarding the scanner's internal camera selection, do not install additional scanning software on this PC, e.g. 3Shape & Shining 3D.

  • Steer Clear of Screen Streaming Software: Installing screen or streaming software can lead to conflicts in the scanner's internal camera usage, so it's best to avoid these.

  • Manually Update Windows and Dell Software Regularly: Depend not on automatic updates, as they're only reliable if you never miss an update. Regular manual checks ensure your system stays current.

  • Keep Shining 3D Software Up-to-Date: Similarly, manually update your Shining 3D software regularly. Automatic updates might not be comprehensive, especially if you've skipped any previously.

  • Accommodate System Updates and Restarts: When your PC prompts for updates or restarts, allow it. These updates are akin to self-care for the PC, helping it maintain optimal performance.

  • Always Use the PC with Power Supply Connected: Operating the PC on battery might lead to the deactivation of the NVIDIA GPU, causing scanning delays. Always plug it into its power source during use.

  • Regular Calibration is Key: You invested in a scanner for its precision. Maintain this accuracy through regular calibration.

  • Dedicate the PC for Scanning Only: This workstation is designed solely for scanning tasks. Refrain from using it for social media browsing or general online activities. Keeping it free from non-essential software and usage minimises the risk of viruses and maintains its efficiency.
